Penguin Plunge 2009!!!!!
January 6th, 2009I hope that that 2009 finds you well.
For those of you who don’t already know, there is a little tradition here in Jamestown called the Penguin Plunge. Every New Years day hundreds of Penguins (crazy Rhode Islanders) gather at Mackerel Cove to plunge into the frosty Atlantic at noon. The object of this rather unique foray into pneumonia is to raise money for Special Olympics of Rhode Island. Penguins hunt for pledges from friends and family who challenge them to actually go into the water.
Each year at the plunge is a little different. The weather conditions are unpredictable as they always are in New England. Some years it is perfectly balmy at 50 degrees and others it is hailing. This, my sixth year as a Penguin, was one of the craziest. Despite foreboding forecasts of bitter cold in the single digits the turnout was still great. The actual plunge time temperature was a nice windy 12 degrees. It just goes to show that you can’t keep a good Penguin down.
